about us

the story behind

plaaslik

If the 2020s so far has taught us anything, it’s that things can change on a dime and that community is everything. Here at PLAASLIK we fully embrace those sentiments. We are extremely proud of our artistic community in Pretoria. We are proud of their abilities to create something so aesthetically pleasing to the eye that it makes our hearts sing and by just looking at it, it lets us walk away with a lighter step.

An American artist, Shepard Fairey said that creating is about sharing ideas, sharing aesthetics, sharing what you believe in with other people. We want to share what the creative souls in our Jacaranda city can do and in doing so, share our idea, hopes, dreams, and beliefs. Their talents should be celebrated and our local community of artists, designers, craftsmen and – women, and creators supported. As we support them, we also open our lives to the beauty of their functional products or works of art. We open up the conversation of how supporting our local artists and creators can keep our culture and community alive and thriving. No matter what is thrown our way and what challenges we face, we are stronger together, now more than ever.

Our vendors and their products are the stars of PLAASLIK both at the markets and in the store. From vendors passionate about creating 100% natural and recyclable products, to those wanting to infuse joy into our lives by using colour, to those that perfectly bring together aesthetics and functionality, our stars can do it all.

These small businesses and creators are not only passionate about the items they create and the art they put into it; they are also adamant that the quality of their creations be top-notch – only the best will do for our Pretoria community. You won’t find the bespoke pieces these amazing people dream about and then realize anywhere else as they truly put heart, mind, and soul into everything they do.

None of our vendors are faceless, nameless, generic manufacturers. We know each one personally and pride ourselves on building lasting relationships. We support each other and grow together to make a better and brighter future.

founder & owner

Linda van der Walt

Linda is the proud mom of a wonderful teenage boy. What you see is what you get with Linda – a down to earth dreamer, entrepreneur and talented designer in her own right. Her passion is creating and collaborating with like-minded individuals and having fun while doing it.

She started the PLAASLIK platforms (Instagram and Facebook) one month after the hard lockdown started in 2020 out of a desire to help those small, creative businesses so deeply affected by it. Seeing people do what they love and live out their passion brings her immense joy. With that being the case, she wanted to provide them with a beautifully curated platform within their own community to showcase their talents during a difficult time.

In her time at the helm of PLAASLIK, she has met some amazing artists and creators and has a personal relationship with the individual behind the products she advertises and sells. With The PLAASLIK Shop opening on the 1st of March 2021, she now provides a permanent home for these small, creative businesses and products and also fills the lives of her customers with the joy of browsing through beautifully crafted items and adding them to their homes.

She is always ready to receive you with a warm, open smile and share her passion and love for the beauty this world and our Pretoria community has to offer.
